I have to thank Martha Stewart for 6 years of inspiration. Much of this 'good thing' carried National Cancer Society for Animals and myself through the last economic year! Thanks Marheeahee!

I'm recalling a memory of me and a young friend of mine holding your Francesca, Sharkey and PawPaw on a rainy, windy day in Boston. You, starving for a sandwich and Jan Bruce your publisher hugging me as if I could replace a sandwich!!! Silly day hugging and kissing Sharkey here!!!

Thanks for creating who you are!!

ONE DOG'S EASTER STORY

I went to see puppies.

A wild dust was stirred into their outdoor pen by some other Weimaraner, who I never saw rush by, for her speed. A few weeks later this crazy animal would become mine.

She was no longer needed for breeding. The call came. Did I want her? No, I wanted a puppy.

Seeing my elderly parents’ eyes crest over with sorrow for this throwaway show dog, brought her home with us to ten ‘depth of heart’ years, until cancer became her life and she blew away.

I named her Professor Zimbabweeps for a boxful of wild and crazy reasons. Like the dust she created on the day I first met her presence, there was much twirling about her in character and deed. All that she was, named her and named her and named her.

She was the great heiress of Colsidex Standing Ovation and Nani Mastercard this and Mastercharge that. She was the dog on TV for Fox News, guiding families through animal cancer, and later, the Founder of the National Cancer Society for Animals. She was also the enthusiast, who often tore open cat food cans, smearing the deliciousness into my longhaired wool rug! Mostly she was a nickname –- Those who knew how she came to me in a flurry of dust, and what she had become to thousands of cancer stricken animals, looked at her face and slate stone color, and said, ‘God’s Dust!’

When our illustrious memories of swimming side by side in Lake Sabbatia, to standing on stage for cameras at Boston’s Prudential Center, came to a close under cancer’s grip, I had her cremated. Her ashes would be spread under two 185 foot ancient pines on the edge of a great hill to the field. We had sat there together, over and over through the years, both musers under the sky.

Oddly her ashes never arrived. I called and called the crematorium. Mistakenly she had been ‘left on ice’ for 2 weeks! I wondered why I had been ‘fortune’s fool’ to such an indignity. On Easter weekend I found out.

A Power greater than myself was about to tap me on the shoulder that the throwaway dog would be safe in His hands, and traveling first class to meet him.

The crematorium called. Professor would be returned to dust from whence she came, on that evening. It was Good Friday. I remembered the thousands of suffering animals. On Saturday friends came from all over to leave peace at my door while the day hung its head in memory of the ‘crazy to playzie,’ the icon, the love…...

On Easter Sunday, a lady that the National Cancer Society for Animals had counseled through the loss of her Cocker Spaniel asked if she could could be the transport of Professor’s ashes home. Into my hand Linda handed me Professor Zimbabweeps. To the field I went. The sun was out. The wind was turning. As I opened the gold canister and tipped it to one side, her presence.... from the first moment I met her to the last second I watched her.... her presence in dust blew by me with the wildest of speed. God’s Dust.

Professor to the World . . .

She died. She simply died.

I saw the last pulse vanish out of her arm as the veterinarian's needle extracted her life away.

Her name was Professor.

Her head dropped from my arms 9 years ago today, at this very minute, as I am writing to you all between miracles and tears.

On this day I turn a story over to you all, a national story.

Rescued Weimaraner Takes on Brain Cancer

After your Purina One (SEE THE MARTHA BLOG) initiative ran through my charity's channels, I started receiving calls.

IF PURINA IS READY, WE HAVE PETS THAT ARE TOO----

" My name is Lisa Massey and my Weimaraner Misty has been the most wonderful, compassionate, loving soul I have ever encountered. About 4 years ago Misty was going to be taken to a humane society where she was going to be euthanized after a certain amount of time. Misty was a neglected abused dog by her previous owner. Hearing all this from my family...I couldn't let that happen. Knowing I had just enough money to get by, I took Misty anyway. How could I live with myself knowing I could have just saved an innocent animals life?...I could never let that happen.

It took a lot of coaxing, spoiling, and love to get an unconditional feeling from her that every human should have the luxury of feeling. This bond between Misty and I has only grown stronger. Misty is the type of dog that you don't have to ever put on a leash. No matter where I go, even if there are other dogs around she is by my side.

Then yesterday Misty got up off the couch to get a treat and she fell. It seemed she had lost all mobility on her right side. Her equilibrium is off and she tends to walk to the right swaying and running into things. She has figured out how to walk but she still drastically sways and cannot go up or downstairs...which is difficult for me since I live on a third story apartment. Because I love Misty I manage to carry a 60 pound dog up and down stairs. It takes my all and sweat...but love can give you more strength than you ever imagined.

I took Misty to the vet yesterday after all of this happened. After the examination the vet told me she was 99.5% sure that Misty was suffering from a brain tumor. Specifically on the right side of her brain because the right side of her body was being affected. The vet said that without treatment she could probably give Misty a couple of weeks to a couple of months to live. Knowing I don't have the finances to even begin even an MRI which is almost two thousand dollars. Or even the 140 dollar visit fee just to go and see the specialist. I could no longer hold back the emotion. Hearing this I started uncontrollably crying...just to think that I was going to watch the soul that meant the most to me in life slowly die.

This is an excrutiating pain I could never explain to anyone. As I sit here writing this tears are streaming down my face just thinking and knowing if I had money I could save her life, I would even break myself to do it. So as I sit here watching my dog slowly die I plead to anyone who reads this to please please help me save my best friend. I am a hard working mom and have just enough to get by. I have never been one to ask for money or help...but now I must put down my pride enough to literally beg anyone who is listening. To save a life of one I love I will be willing to do anything. I sit here as the days pass helpless and hope and pray that maybe just maybe by me writing this, someone will have enough heart to help. Please just put yourself in my shoes...would you be willing to beg to save the ones you love?....Please....Please...."

"We've only gotten one person who doesn't think he knows how he can help," I reported to my board at the National Cancer Society for Animals.

I was saddened this week when I approached a gentleman within the pet sales industry who repeatedly has voiced to me a verbally convincing commitment to "do anything for the animals." His sales arena is adaptive equipment for handicapped pets. Since I had received a call about a Weimaraner from Fort Worth Texas who had gone into ambulatory dysfunction due to the onset of brain cancer, I knew we had a match!

I asked him to post our story (post above) to reach out to his viewers.

ANDREA - I know you stated a willingness to do whatever you could for our animal referrals. I'd like to ask you to run this story. We're starting a media campaign with some good sized influentials in our court. Would like you to be part of it by joining us in your commitment to raise funds for animals in need.

We would be extremely grateful for donations from your viewers and Handicapped Pets!

MARK - Looking forward to working with you – I believe there’s a great deal of synergy between our two organizations.

ANDREA - Will you join us in your commitment to raise funds for animals in need by posting this young lady's plea?

ANDREA - Hadn't heard back from you on the young lady's time sensitive plea. Do you feel that there would be conflict of interest for you to post her dilemma now that you also support a 501c3 (wheelchair foundation) within your for-profit? I would think not from my perspective.

I know you've been a proponent of directly helping animals in duress. I hope you can assist us. We're taking current cases national because of the Purina One Initiative and the panel of oncologists we're assembling to discuss the current cancer drug breakthrough. This particular case I direct to you since the pet is losing neurological mobility.

I'd like to get everyone's name out there who shows specific support to our animals with cancer.

Hope to hear good news about posting this young woman's story and plea.

MARK - This is a sweet story, Andrea. I’m not sure I have anything to add – your reach is huge and I believe I would be duplicating your efforts. My aim is to create the system that help thousands – as I am trying to do with my foundation. I really don’t have a place to post this that you haven’t already reached, so I’m not sure what you’re asking me to do.

ANDREA - Mark, people are people. You get hits. That's people. I think I understand what you are saying. I'll report it as such.

MARK - (IN REGARD TO ABOVE CONVERSATION) I was surprised and disappointed at your post that suggested that I was uncaring and selfish. With your vast experience in non-profit management, I felt sure you would understand and courteously respect my reply.

As you know, I have created a method by which a large number of handicapped and special needs animals have benefitted. My system, involving a series of applications, a verification process, and donation method is carefully crafted to help the most number of dogs and avoid the fraud and theft that plagues us all. I have 50 animals currently in line for help and assistance. They have gone through a process to get into that position. They will get the help they need if I can possibly provide it.

What you are inadvertenly asking, Amdrea, is that these animals in need should be edged out of the help I'm trying to provide by putting your case at the head of the line and bypassing a working system?

Misty is getting help from you and your connections. When your friend Mattha Steweart takes notice - Misty will get all the help needed. The animals I am trying to help have no other advocates.

Lets work together toward the upliftment of all. I hope you'll do the courtesy of posting this.

DESERVES BLUE RIBBON AS HUGE AS HIS HEART

Martha Stewart, animal advocate about to be awarded for such by the ASPCA, fell victim to a fire taking the life of her chow. Many other canines also perished in a kennel propane explosion in Pennsylvania last month.

A man named TIMOTHY rescued other dogs over a fence as he himself was on fire. This critically injured propane truck driver has become the HERO OF DOGS to many of us.

There will be a national card to him from the hundreds of well wishers who expressed condolences on THE MARTHA BLOG in March. The card's appearance will commence on Easter Sunday and will run in perpetuity from animal lovers and friends of heroes.

We wish Timothy the 'renewal of spring' throughout his recovery.

It's the year of the woman! At least as far as the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA)is concerned. The MPA and the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) have just announced that they will be honoring MARTHA STEWART with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

MARTHA STEWART, founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, will be inducted into the ASME Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame.

MARTHA STEWART created an entirely new magazine category...The influence of Stewart's editorial vision can be seen at newsstands — and in homes — throughout the United States.

STEPS INTO THE 'MIX'.

One of our many initiatives has been the "Gourmet Fido" program. Natural foods not only belong on Aunt Emma's and Uncle Morris' table, but in the paws of each animal who wants to live to the ripe old age of 'healthy'!

Wheaton College, CEO Spencer's alma mater, has graciously been donor of surplus fresh vegetables, fruits, breads and meats to aid in this cause.

Each Saturday NCSA hosts animal nutrition time within their charity shop, part of NCSA's ten acre project site at 102 Crane Street in Norton. Nutrition talk is available to visitors and there are demonstrations of meat and leafies preparation and safe eating.

"Thanks to Wheaton, we are developing a high level antioxidant treat that will be for sale in our shop - broccoli sticks, pasted with peanut butter!" says Spencer.

Come visit my blog studio at my home

I thought I would take you to a pleasant and quiet area of my home in Bedford for a little tour. Welcome to my studio, which I designed in the elegantly simple and functional Shaker style. This is where I hope to set up my easel one day and return to my love of painting. In the meantime, this space is being occupied by me and my blog team, Laura Plimpton and Eliad Laskin. We love working here because it is a very calm studio-like atmosphere and there are so few distractions from the rest of the goings on at the farm.

We Ain't Got a Barrel of Money . . . .

Ten years ago I took my pocketbook and let it run wild creating an organization.

It was a personal mission and I chose to become the sole private benefactor. With no kids to put through college, I felt I could honor the memory of Professor, my Weimaraner who had just died of cancer, with the use of memorial money.

The enterprise grew rapidly due to national need. We supplied a national support service through a 24/7 hotline, educational outreach through the national media and financial help to cancer centers and individuals seeking treatment for their pets.

At the end of 7 years I was urged to go non-profit and give my personal shoes a rest. We applied for 501c3 status and got it.

For the next three years it was maintained as such. I continued spending personal monies to fund it, however. I was too busy working with animals and owners, hosting publicity events, writing and producing educational outreach and managing staff to dig into money chasing.

NO TIME TO WAIT

I had no time to wait for dollars. Animal death and mourning can't hold back until someone writes a check.

We eventually headed into public fund raising by hosting an event on the roof of the Ritz-Carlton in Boston. Thematically it was a smash hit. Financially it was a mess. I decided to start a search for an executive director with expertise in running a charity.

DURING THE INTERIM

We found that as snow white as we were in intention, because money had come into the picture, we were also suspects in everything from paper clip hoarding to illegal taxidermy of Wolverines in Malaysia.

Of course, we had done nothing wrong but spend money without asking for any in return. In addition, no one on board or staff was academian in non-profit structure. We were all bleeding hearts for animals dying of cancer.

We evidently appealed to a leader with the Attorney General. She offered to be our personal guide through new filings. Pages later we rejoiced we had found her.

NEW PERSPECTIVE KEPT NCSA AFLOAT

As my search for non-profit directorship waddled with no immediate result and the dollars in my wallet were becoming coins, I organized a team of money logic colleagues from bank vice president to former CEO of Gillette. The dozen of us worked with my board and staff to take a new perspective towards helping animals with cancer. "No animal with cancer has ever given up, and they have no money." Onward we plodded.

Now at the end of the three year period into non-profit directorship we have lost one such director to cancer herself, another to a family member with cancer, one other to a personal disability and still one more to board consensus.

As for the remaining coins in my wallet -- the economy claimed them.

I am currently endeavoring to settle our 10 years of rich resource into the hands of a favored corporation with the power to turn our startup decade into perpetuity.

With such seasoned corporate mogulism managing the resource and notoriety we've developed, NCSA will go skyscraper high. Talks are on the table for 2009.

MY 'PROFESSOR', CANINE NCSA FOUNDER AND CANCER HERO

NCSA's struggles aside, the dog who led me to each moment I've lived for 10 years, is gone. Professor died of bone cancer. I was powerless as her head dropped down out of my hands on that day. Profit, Non-Profit, Dollar Bill Heaven, Retiree, whatever. I now know that there is no end to the help needed TO REACH ALL OF THE HANDS OF THE FACES WHOSE ANIMALS ARE BEING BURIED BY CANCER.

Hi Martha,

This poignant story to become an excerpt within my book, "Professor in the Sky with Diamonds," is about Dr. Stephen Caldwell, Professor's long time veterinarian who saw her through ear cleanings to end stage cancer care.

Dr. Caldwell, pictured here with a tribute from "Professor" presented by myself and Professor's puppy Spencer, sits within his own need for care at Braintree Rehabilitation Center in Massachusetts.

Caldwell, a renowned animal doctor who whelped President Bush's puppies from his dog Millie (you might remember the book, Millie's Book), literally fell victim to a new life moments after the Fourth of July, 2001.

He and I were to meet that morning to discuss honoring another animal in Professor's memory. Instead, his secretary's voice rang my line and said, "Steve fell down his stairs at home and is being air lifted to Boston."

For the next year he and I spent many visits together reminiscing through a coma he was not supposed to come out of, then through throat swabbing and neck suctioning and mental rehabilitation. Today he is walking and acting as consult to National Cancer Society for Animals among the many other things in his life.

Steve suffered from male anorexia for many years after leaving Washington for Massachusetts. As he was brushing his teeth on the morning of his fall, he was too weak from the disease to finish. He instead collapsed backwards down the stairs to be smack- shattered with a fractured neck. The hard marble floor had become his life's pivot.

Steve and I had always spoken of miracles. He and Professor's other doctors often marveled at her life with cancer as a gift not to be questioned .We recalled the many news stories about her headlined "Miracle Dog". Little did Steve know that a crash to his home's floor as he was near death from anorexia, then within death through coma, would be his journey to a life of health and wellness.

Steve's brain trauma left him without memory of anorexic desire. Now at 192 pounds, Dr. Caldwell is a man remade. When I call him for animal consult and hear that the Collie needs antioxidant Q-10, I say thank you to an old Friend of Professor's, . . in the Sky with Diamonds.

Britain has made a most unpopular decision.

The British Foreign Office is quoted as "saddened" that Big Ben blemished itself this weekend by landing an official poo poo to your visit, and then dropping it at your feet upon arrival.

One spokesperson states, "We are not pleased at this action. We see the economic activity Ms. Stewart's business ventures could create."

ALWAYS THE MONEY, ALWAYS THE MONEY !

This Brit thinks my homeland need go beyond the "what's in it for me" line of sorrow.

Here we have a creme de la creme lady of planet proportion noted as one of the 5 hardest working individuals alive. She has brought nothing to a scope of our worldwide kin but education, elegance, and astounding inspiration to succeed at dream making.

WHAT ABOUT THE LADY WITH HER SUITCASE?

I believe public sorrow need be, not to consumer loss, but to one lady and her suitcase who loves the British landscape, despite this week's blinding fog.

MOSES _______

I needed to find Professor's genetic heir before she died.

A cross country search found him.

The puppy Moses of national champion line, traced himself right to Professor's show stopping St. Louis lineage. I hurried across state to meet him, to hug him home.

Nose to nose they met. Then, within seconds, she collapsed.

A few days later......... Spencer,* his new puppy brother, and I drove Professor to a table and a.......needle. Nine week old Moses then drove Spencer and I home.

He sat on the lawn of this new home and stared through the eyes of those who were left.

Moses the loving.......Three years into his brotherhood with Spencer there would be a splitting of souls. A fight between them.....costing thousands to repair each beautiful animal would not alter Moses' love for Spencer......Still, today he reaches to stare through the eyes of he who was left.

And we,......... we hold fast to Moses who would not only struggle our struggle, but would come to endure his own. Taunted by an array of immuno-deficiency diseases, he took treatment for life threatening facial muscle disease to serious eye malfunction.

Today, years later, Moses walks tall.....perfectly healthy, with no struggle at all. This is MOSES, named for the suffering.

AND in that suffering ..............we would all come to bear the birth of unfaltering faith and a skyscraper strength .... through his eyes.

The Weimaraners for Sale classifieds landed on the car seat, and off Andrea and Professor drove to a town called Lakeville.

With Professor's radiation 'X' painted across her back, she enthusiastically urged Andrea to put that one male in the car.

Spencer gave Professor life where there was none. For one year and 2 weeks there was merriment laughing death to the shadows. The doctors said there was no explanation for Professor's well being. 'FResh Spencer,' 'ATTitude Spencer,' the most aggressive Weimaraner trainers have ever seen, had made us a miracle.

He was her glory, and he became mine.

....Attacking a state police dog, though he was muzzled, to defend the honor of my pocketbook on the floor across the room .....coaching his own veterinarian out of a coma after a serious accident.

Here's that same puppy with Professor again (readers, see previous post, below).

Yesterday's photo to you put him under her leadership. Time later, these magazine footage shots put him clearly in charge.

Professor's portrait and Memorial Day took he and I on an afternoon many seasons long.

Look at the shot on the bottom, right. He is a huge clug of attitude !!! If you truly love animals, I would wish that you and he could meet before his 10 and a half years settle him to aging. He is the center of such a book of mine to come !

If your field ever has a spot for his feet to run in the world through, it would be a personal happiness for myself and my readers.

Going ahead with my photo a day quest, I present you with picture two.

Shakespeare and her litter mate, Butterfly are requested when an agreeable and astutely obedient Weimaraner is needed for public purpose.

From a nine hour stolen goods recovery search at the Massachusetts Convention Center to a fast paced and focused trot and run through a brunch at the Ritz, each presents with perfection.

Happy Mothers' Day From a Weimaraner Mammy & Her Pups !

Hi Martha,

In a recent blog to you I mentioned a pup a day photo series coming your way, starting with Mothers' Day.

So here we have Mother Noah in the foreground, dressed and ready to take three of her children on an outing to the beautiful Hilliard's Candy Mansion in Bolton, Massachusetts.

Her well disciplined lineup of children consist of Shakespeare, then Jericho, and in back, Butterfly. The word 'Moses' at the base of the picture is embroidery upon a bed belonging to their father.

He remains in his livingroom at home, smoking a pipe and eating some slippers. Plans for Fathers' Day are on his mind.

Historic Farm For Animals Holds Memories From Wagons to Wampanoags.

The National Cancer Society for Animals has homesteaded itself on a 10 acre farm for a decade of years now. It has hosted the media, ailing animals from across the country, and events drawing historians, artists and animal lovers.

Today, however, economic woes bring halt to some of the lighter fare held at what was once the old wagon painting shed, part of the 1765 Crane Dairy Farm in Norton, MA.

Antiques throughout the 14 room main house are being sold at auction. The animal organization's pet ambulance and now, antique horse wagon are next on the block for chopping. We asked our friend and champion of animals, Martha Stewart , if she, being a wagon collector, would take the once brown fruit wagon, now slate and cranberry to match the main gate. "The wagon which has had a public image with the media through the years is now in need of care and storage. If you'd like to give it a loving home, let us know."

An array of interested buyers is being sought throughout the spring. "We look forward to rolling our good memories onward to new ownership," says Andrea Spencer, CEO of "We Are The World Productions," an entrepreneur collaborative hosting the animal cancer organization.

Massachusetts State Forester Joe Perry and I have been working together for a dozen or more years to preserve and conserve a historic forest which I own.

Professor to the World . . .

She died. She simply died.

I saw the last pulse vanish out of her arm as the veterinarian's needle

extracted her life away.

Her name was Professor.

Her head dropped from my arms 9 years ago today, at this very minute,

as I am writing to you all between miracles and tears.

On this day I turn a story over to you, a national story.

Throughout this new year, newspapers, magazines and every horn blowing media mouthpiece will call out, “Introducing Professor Zimbabweeps!”

The story of Professor, a throwaway dog turned international icon for miles upon miles of families worldwide, will thread through the media like the tail of a firecracker.

Story excerpts from New Delhi, India to Rome, Italy where hands reach across oceans to hold hope together for thousands of animals gunned down by an insidious tormentor disease . . . . . . . . .

Let me start by telling you . . .

. . . . . the story of the moment when my heart leaped across a room onto a grey metal exam table at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. Doctors told it, "We have some shocking news. Professor has cancer." Unshielded and iced, that heart of mine stood tall, beating against the news. I, on the other side of the room with nothing beating in my chest, died, I simply died.

Since that occurrence 10 years ago, Professor's soul and I have a book in the making, Professor in the Sky with Diamonds.

Let me begin on this anniversary of one dog within one and only animal kingdom by storytelling to you from that book. I'll take you along the way, meeting a nation full of goose bump raising testimony to life, and prove to you the absence of death.

Hi Dawna,

As promised, I'm offering a little history on NCSA's project site. My letters to you are actually, in part, becoming drafts for my book !

The main house centered on our country property site is used for meetings, counseling, events and overnight guests. It was built by my ancestors in 1764.

I've had other buildings added and the state forestry department clear and clean land under an educational program they sponsor to our benefit. At this time we are up to 10 acres of project site up and running.

This main 'Homestead House' building was once the wagon painting shed for the horses and buggies that would pull in to the blacksmith shop which stood just beside it. Into what is now our counseling and family visiting room would come the wagons! They would roll right through what is now my chimney and fireplace. For that afternoon it would be 'paint your wagon' time on Crane Street !

My grandmother Esther Crane, had Brown University come down for an archaeological dig in the '70s. We now have fine tomahawks and arrowheads mounted on walnut in our administrative arrival room. The Wampanoag Indian tribe had lived with us along our 3 mile river. There is still an underground sheep pass that they built at the foot of the hill.

A long time prior to any of this, the Queen of England somehow got in cahoots with the Cranes and knew they were coming to discover my back yard! She granted them 150 acres, and a bag of money. Their papers show me that, sure enough, off they sailed to Norton !!

Then another family by the name of 'Spencer' proved to be aggravating to our Queen, as so many Spencers in England have been, so off they went from her onto whaling adventures far from the homeland. Little did I know they would place their spoils into my house after stopping in Plymouth for lunch and some rifle polishing. Fine teak wood trunks and oriental jewel boxes from China, ivory this and ivory that . . . .

Good thing those Cranes and Spencers set sail from Queenie, met and married, or I'd have nothing to renovate, rebuild, dust and hang on walls !

Anyway, here we all are still digging up artifacts from the 200 foot kennel I built when we became NCSA, and the only tribe left is the one I created -- Wampanoag re-pronounced Weimaraner.

I'm complete, replete with taking on this insidious disease, the number one killer of animals.

How could I possibly have expected to see all of this when I was pen prepped for recipes!

Hi Martha,

Hollywood broke cement on the face of Queen Elizabeth recently.

In Stephen Frears' film, THE QUEEN, it was with the employ, not of heads of state or swaddled baby, but via ANIMAL.

If a glorious stag can tilt a smile up from the heart of the world's icon of locked hearts, and if Hollywood found its way to audience applause in depicting this, then there's INDUSTRY ahead.

Let me send incentives along to you from time to time to dimensionalize your ANIMAL MAGAZINE idea, to perhaps create a national animal society within its pages and beyond.
